English Extension Group

Staff: English Team

Time: TBC

Frequency: Fortnightly

Do you love English? Are you are considering applying to study an English related degree (including Literature, Language, Linguistics, Creative Writing, Journalism, Marketing)?  If so, this is the group for you. Each week,  there will be different sessions run by English staff or invited guests who will present varied interesting topics. Past sessions range from Modernism to Hip Hop Shakespeare, from what it’s really like to study English at university to topics to choose for an EPQ and presentations about how to use English in a marketing career. We will help you to prepare for and write your Personal Statement and what to look for when applying for English based courses.  This year we are excited to organise more trips - last year we went to Dove Cottage in Grasmere and to see 'One Man Two Guvnors' at the Octagon and this year there will be more!

Booked Up

Staff: SUT

Time: TBC

Frequency: 2 x Half termly

Booked Up is open to any students who enjoy reading for pleasure and want to discuss their reactions to a variety of texts and authors - you don't have to be studying English to join. We will mostly discuss short stories and links to the texts are given in advance so you will have plenty of time to read them and decide what you think about the ideas raised and the author's style. We will be starting with a Margaret Atwood short story which focuses on revenge and memory. All you need is a love of reading, an open mind and be ready to chat.
